A few weeks ago I got an interesting call from my grandfather. He told me that he received his Wells Fargo checking statement in the mail and in the middle of it was my bank statement. I thought maybe he was mistaken and asked him to mail me what he had found. He sent it in the mail and when it arrived, I was shocked- it is my bank statement complete with account number and a detailed list of account transactions. What's on there? My work direct deposit amounts, how much I paid for those new shoes, my mortgage payment, my student loan payments... everything! So, I called Wells Fargo today, asked them what happened and asked them what they could do to make sure it didn't happen again. I talked to a customer service person that was very nice, but the solution was ridiculous. Basically, they tried to tell me that my statement got sent to my grandfather because it was a PMA account and now it isn't anymore. What a PMA account is, I still don't understand. Somehow being a PMA account means that since my father is a signer on my account and my grandfathers, my grandfather got sent my statement. Let me repeat that, my privacy was violated because I have my father on my account and he happens to also be a signer on another account. Thank goodness he is only on the account of another family member or my personal information could have gone to someone else! The solution? According to Wells Fargo I cannot fix it, instead I need to have my father call and remove the account from the PMA. My privacy, but somehow I can't fix it? Ridiculous! Beyond ridiculous, I would think this has to be against the law. When I stated how ridiculous it was I was given another option which was to close my account and open a new one. No thanks Wells Fargo, if I close that account I will be moving my accounts to another bank, not another Wells Fargo account. I'm so grumpy about it that I haven't yet decided what the "right" thing is to do.
